Yes it would be a great starter. Very hard to break unless you run full speed into a wall =). The car is an investment the pricey stuff is the fuel. Especially if you race non-stop.

They are a blast, but you really need to be skilled to do it. You also need a good smooth track or car park.
Making them drift properly is very very hard for a beginner and unless you've been doing RC for years I'd probably steer clear.
By the way, any car can be made into a drift car by making sure its rear wheel drive, putting on some drift tyres and putting 40,000WT oil in the diff.
